Indian Council of Historical Research

Indian Council of Historical Research. This is the official site promoting the study and scientific writing of history in India. It features research projects, seminars and symposia, and journals published. Located in New Delhi with regional centers in Guwahati and Bangalore, India.

The site is relatively new even if the organization behind is not. The domain was registered only a year and a half ago. The Wayback Machine does not show any copies of older versions of the site.

Unfortunately, there is not a lot of full-text journals or books here. However, the site does have an index of several of the journals as well as a listing of books and conference proceedings from the organization. As such, this may prove to be a good starting point for researching Indian history.

Miland Brown,

I am making a link to this post on my blog.

ICHR is major body promoting research in history in India. However, during NDA government, it got involved in controversy.

You write, "Unfortunately, there is not a lot of full-text journals or books here. However, the site does have an index of several of the journals as well as a listing of books and conference proceedings from the organization. As such, this may prove to be a good starting point for researching Indian history."

However, this is true in case of numerous similar site which is coming up in India under the aegis of UGC and Edusat programme. If you have followed some of my post, I have been pointing out this major shortcoming in the overall planning on making information available on net.

The best example for comparison is the digitization of India original sources with US government association about which I have commented elsewhere on my blog.
Another example is the availability of Social Scientist journal which was funded by ICHR and latter that funding was withdrawn. The journal in digital form is available on a US site.

In short, the digitizaiton and making it available through the general public through this technology of internet is not being done the way it should be. On the other hand, the material is made available through foreign colloboration.

It is really fascinating that India is earning more through IT industry and software development. However, when it comes to get the benefit of this new technology, we fumble.

Anyhow, thanks for pointing out this source.
Regards,
Sumir
