I have a seemingly fortuitous connection with that flu epidemic. My mother's father was 30 years old in 1918 when he contracted the flu; he had been married two years and was living in Chicago. He and two of his buddies caught the flu at about the same time. My grandfather went to a sauna and stayed there for a few days until the flu had been sweated out of his body. His two friends did not go to the sauna -- they died shortly thereafter. My mother was born about a year and a half later. Kind of a 'what if?' story.
